Mammut Eiswand Advanced Jacket
Mammut Eiswand Advanced Jacket
(reviewed by avid mountaineer Orlaith, aged 12)
Both me and my Dad got our Eiswand Advanced jackets last year, and since then I have been living in it on and off the hills! The fit is spot on. It is a slim athletic fit, so it is snug and super comfy!
The main material is comfortable, stretchy and feels nice and warm against the skin. It keeps me the perfect temperature and features a textured abrasion resistant fabric on the shoulders and lower under arm areas. I’ve worn this on numerous consecutive 7–8 hour mountain days and on every one it feels and smells just as good as it did the very first day out.
The little things matter and to this regard they’ve added a soft piece of fabric to the covering at the top of the zip so that it doesn’t catch or scratch your chin when zipped up fully which I find very beneficial!
There are also two tidy sized chest pockets for easy access when wearing a rucksack, so you don’t have to unclip your waistbelt to gain access. I find these pockets useful for gloves, a hat, a buff, jellies, phone or GPS device and can even squeeze in a folded-up map and compass on those days when you need them close and handy.
The hood has a neat snug fit and is extremely comfortable. It is a bit too much of a stretch to go over a climbing helmet but is nice and cosy when worn underneath. Featured on the back of the women’s hood is a small hole for your hair/ponytail to protrude through. It does look a tad strange when in use but is undeniably handy to help tidy away that unruly mop and avoid getting a mouth full of hair or having it stuck to your face or in your eyes on those all too typical wild, wet ’n windy Irish mountain days. Considering the Eiswand Advanced softshell jacket is relatively light at only a modest 298-300g it still provides a superb amount of warmth and cosiness and is tidy to squeeze into a full bag!
As a fan of the thumb loops it was cool to find them included into this jacket’s sleek design. These keep my wrists and hands toasty warm and are even more cosy when wearing light gloves over them. No need for Velcro straps!
To summarize, the Eiswand Advanced is a really great jacket and I think Mammut have fulfilled my high expectations once again! It is suitable for any sport or exercise and I even feel great in mine when I’m wearing it as casual-wear and I would definitely recommend to those in the market for a cool, sleek and well thought out softshell. Out of 10 I would definitely give it a 9/10!
