Mountain Proficiency and Navigation courseLearn to become safe and self sufficient in the mountains. Our mountain proficiency courses aim to give you the vital map, compass and relevant hill skills to enable you to navigate in all weathers and is suitable for beginners upwards. They are aimed at individuals, clubs and youth groups. Our 1 day course is based in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountains – and starts off with a short introduction, followed by a day out on the lower slopes learning about contours, pacing and timing distances, and getting to grips with really understanding what the map is showing us and how landscape features are represented. 1 day course syllabus: Maps, scales, grid system & grid references Concept of the three D’s – Direction, Distance and Detail The Compass, different types, advantages and disadvantages, measuring and taking bearings, allowing for magnetic variation Techniques for following bearings in bad visibility, back bearings Pacing distances and timing distances, all measuring and calculations Understanding Contours – the shape of the land – and interpreting map feature €75pp

Mountain Skills 2 ( 2 Day Course Nov 21st Nov 22nd )
Mountain Skills 2 builds on those skills introduced in MS1 and is a two day course involving 20 hours of instruction & tuition. We will cover emergency procedures, grid references, navigation techniques, compass bearings, night navigation and introduction to mountain scrambling & negotiating steep ground.
At the end of this course you will be well on your journey to being self sufficient in the mountains, in most weather and visibility conditions. You will also have a thorough understanding of the preparation and level of competence required to move onto Mountain Skills Assessment.
At the end of this course you will have a solid and comprehensive introduction to the skills needed to be self sufficient in the hills & mountains. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader award (ML)
