Launch of - KILLARNEYS "ULTIMATE" HIGH PEAKS CHALLENGE
A spectacular, inaugural mountain challenge event has just been launched. Have you got what it takes??
With Kerry being without doubt the Adventure Capital of Ireland, this is the pinnacle of all mountain adventures and it will take place in some of the most dramatic mountain scenery Ireland has to offer. Killarney’s Ultimate High Peaks Challenge is an exhilarating and truly unique event in which participants will self navigate along a pre planned marshalled route across the highest mountain range in the country – The magnificent MacGillycuddy’s Reeks.
Adventure enthusiasts will trek over 25 km of stunning, wild, rugged mountain terrain ticking off many of Ireland’s highest summits with a total height gain of over 2500 meters.
This is not a race but a challenge event where participants will test their personal navigational skills, fitness determination and stamina.
The Killarney Ultimate High Peaks Challenge is organised and run by Mountain enthusiasts FOR Mountain enthusiasts.
Piaras Kelly and the crew at KerryClimbing are delighted to be involved in the organising and running of this exciting event along with good friends John Cronin of Cronin’s Yard and Killarney native - Sean Tagney who together are all active mountaineers and outdoor adventurists and possess a vast knowledge of the Kerry Mountains and their surrounds.
Their amalgamation brings together an exceptional amount of skills and experience in the organising of this unique mountain challenge event.

Cronin’s Yard has long been used as the traditional start point for ascents of Ireland’s highest Mountains. Situated at the entrance to the awe inspiring Hag’s Glen it is the gateway to the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and an ideal location for the start and finish of this event which will culminate in a fitting after party to celebrate.
Sean Tagney is a seasoned adventure racer and athelete and brings a huge amount of inside knowledge and experience to helo make this event one you won’t forget.
The finale to this exhausting but hugely memorable challenge will culminate with an enjoyable after party in Cronin’s Yard which will include refreshments, a welcome delicious barbeque washed down perhaps with a few cold beers from the bar, some lively traditional Irish musical entertainment along of course with the presentation of a unique medal to mark your participation in this sensational and hugely rewarding day of Ultimate High Peaks Adventures.

Day 4 - An easier and more relaxed day today spent walking the Old Mining Road with free time in Llanberis to potter around and a visit to the highly informative National Slate Museum.
Day 5 - After a nice and relaxed morning, make your way to the ferry for your return journey home.

INTRODUCING OUR MOUNTAIN PROFICIANCY COURSE
This instructional climb is aimed at the more regular hill-walker who would like to step it up a gear and bring it to the next level. Perhaps you are training or preparing for other upcoming adventures or climbs such as Kilimanjaro etc and if so then this is the perfect trek for you!!!
Subjects covered during this ascent:
* Night Navigation/Map reading
* Night safety/Additional hazards
* Equipment and Emergency procedures
* Group assessment and dealing with fatigue
* Scrambling/Movement on steep ground
THIS COURSE INVOLVES A NIGHT TIME ASCENT OF CORRÁN TUATHAIL BY BROTHER O' SHEAS GULLY, SUMMITING AS THE SUN BEGINS TO RISE AND TAKING IN THE FIRST OF THE DAYS RAYS ON THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE LAND!!!
We will then continue this challenging, instructional and hugely fulfilling day by traversing the entire length of the Eastern Reeks taking in the super classic “Cnoc na Péiste ridge”, to finish at Kate Kearney’s cottage in the Gap of Dunloe and in the process taking in 7 summits over 800meters in height!!!
These include : Corrán Tuathail - 1040mtrs, Cnoc Toinne- 845mtrs, Cnoc an Chuillin – 958mtrs, Maolán Buí – 973mtrs, Cnoc na Péiste – 988mtrs and Cruach Mhór – 932mtrs
